DIABETES DEMOGRAPHY

In India, diabetes has been increasing steadily since 1990 but the pace increased from year 2000, resulting in an increase in the prevalence of diabetes from 7.1% to 8.9% between 2009 and 2019.
It is estimated that the number of individuals with diabetes in India will increase from 74 million (1 in 12) in 2021 to more than 134 million in 2045. Worldwide there are about 422 million patients and about 1.5deaths are due to diabetes Total health expenditures for diabetes is about USD 760.3 billion in 2019, might reach USD 845 billion by 2045.
Reasons for Diabetes: Genetic, Stress, Pandemic like COVD, Life style factors like Irregular diet habits, Overweight, obesity, and physical inactivity, Environmental changes, Hormonal changes, few drugs etc.
Rise in Diabetes is due to increased social stress; increased consumption high sugar & ultra-processed foods and increased urbanization.

Symptoms of diabetes:

  • Increased thirst & dry mouth.
  • Increased urination.
  • Fatigue.
  • Blurred vision.
  • Unexplained weight loss.
  • Frequent skin and/or vaginal infection.

Complications of diabetes:

  • Cardiovascular (heart and blood vessel) issues like Heart attack, CAD, Stroke.
  • Neuropathy or Nerve damage.
  • Kidney failure.
  • Retinopathy (Eye damage) can lead to blindness.
  • Foot infections & amputations.
  • Skin infections.
  • Erectile dysfunction.
  • Depression.
